Unlike other types of land survey, the purpose of this survey is to map the contours, relief, roughness, shape, configuration and three-dimensional characteristics of the surface of the terrain. This can include trees, streets, manholes, utility poles and more. A topographic survey also determines required setbacks as well as information about surface and possibly underground utilities.

The latest survey technology is used — Leica, Sokkia and Trimble GPS & Total Stations. In open spaces we use GNSS receivers; in industrial areas a robotic total station is used to measure horizontal and vertical angles and sloping distances. When an area is inaccessible or dangerous to collect data, we use reflector-less technology.
